I've decided to do the A to Z Blogger Challenge this year and I'm recommending five books all from the same alphabetical genre each day. So today, Q is for Queer. Here are five of my favorite LGBTQ reads.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Leithan - John Green and David Leithan are two of my absolute favorite authors, so naturally I adore the book that they co-authored. Will Grayson and Will Grayson are two very different teenage boys, one's straight, one's gay, both are pretty clueless about life in general. When their paths accidentally cross, great things happen. Oh and Tiny Cooper is the greatest rainbow colored supporting character ever to appear in a YA novel, you can't help but love him.
Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You by Peter Cameron - The LGBTQ part of this book is pretty minimal, but it's still a great story. Some books have tons of action and are impossible to put down, but then when you finish it's like "what did I just read?". This is not one of those stories. It's slower paced and subtle. James is a moody teen filled with angst and not much else. There aren't huge nail biting plot points, but James is just one of those great characters that gets in your head and stays there long after the last page, at least I stayed with me.
How I Paid For College: A novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship, and Musical Theater by Marc Acito - Marc is a friend of mine so I had to slip one of his books into one of my lists. And the characters in this book definitely span all possible sexual orientations, so today seemed like a good place for this book to land. In case you were wondering, this is a very funny book about a high school theater freak who turns to a life of crime in order to raise the money for Julliard when his father insists on sending him to business school.
Naomi adn Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan - I know this is the second Devid Levithan book on today's list, but I did select different co-authors. And seriously, this book is so funny I couldn't not put it on my list. Plus Ely is an adorably gay character that Naomi is unfortunate enough to fall in love with.
Dramarama by E. Lockhart - I LOVED camp as a kid, so I always love reading books about kids at summer camp. And at this summer drama camp there are enough queer campers for it to take the final spot on today's queer line-up.
