I've decided to do the A to Z Blogger Challenge this year and I'm recommending five books all from the same alphabetical genre each day. So today, G is for Girl. Back on the second, I had B stand for Boy. So it only seems fitting that today I talk about great books written for girls. There isn't exactly a shortage of girl centered YA. But here are five of my favorite girl books.
How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr - This is a very powerful story about what it means to be a mother and what it means to be a daughter. After reading it last fall, I gave a copy to my mother for Christmas. She loved it, which is prove that more than just teenage girls can fall in love with these well written female characters.
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray - A group of beauty queens get stranded on a dessert island... The tag line of this book sounds like the set up for a joke, and it is a very funny read. It's also a surprisingly poininet story about the strength of women, even women that compete in swimsuit competitions.
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart - Frankie is a smart girl who upsets the status quo by uncovering and then meddling in the affairs of the most secretive male society at her boarding school. It's a book about a young girl worth routing for and a very fun read.
Dairy Queen by Catherine Gibert Murdock - When DJ decides to try out for the football team, her world is turned upside down. Part sports drama, part love story, all strong female characters, this is a great book with a wonderful voice that is guaranteed to captivate.
Like Mandarin by Kristen Hubbord - There are lots of books about girls falling in love with boys. Like Mandarin instead deals with the equally important teenage relationship of girls befriending girls. This powerful story of friendship is definitely worth reading.What about you? I HEART Sara Zarr and I've only read one of her books so far. I definitely want to read How to Save a Life, though. Also Like Mandarin has been on my TBR pile forever!
The only one I've read on your list is Like Mandarin--which was AWESOME! I'd also add one of Courtney Summers' books. Her girls aren't always likeable, but SO real.
I think I'd have to go with LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR. I loved that Lola was her own person, with her own completely unique sense of style. She's just an all-around great and very real character to me. Loved her :)

Another of my favorite girl books is The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. It's what made me want to sail the seven seas and have many an adventure as a 5th grader, and I'm reminded of that every time I read it! Also, I loved all the girls in Just As Long As We're Together. No one writes friendships like Judy Blume.
