For this week’s Road Trip Wednesday, the good people over at YA Highway are asking the question:
What books were you obsessed with as a kid?

I have three words for you—RAMONA THE PEST. I grew up in Portland, Oregon. Ramona grew up in Portland, Oregon. I had a pet rock. Ramona had a pet rock. I loved tormenting my older brother. Ramona loved tormenting her older sister. I was spunky and fun but not always well behaved. Ramon was spunky and fun but not always well behaved.
I loved all the Ramona books as a kid. A part of me wished Ramon was a real live girl that lived on my street so we could play together. But she only lived in books. So I made sure to act extra pesty so that my neighbors wouldn’t feel too much of a loss. As a little kid, people called me Katie. But I knew deep down I was just like Ramona.
What about you? What was your favorite childhood book?

I somehow missed out on Ramona. Did you like the movie version?
I loved Ramona, too. I wanted to be just like her (even though I always followed orders). I still think of her when I hear the national anthem. After hearing it, she asked her dad what the dawnzerly light was. :)
I missed Ramona too - I think I tried to read them after I read Judy Blume and I was just a little too old at that point. :\
Confession: never read a Ramona book. Ever.
I'm sure I read Ramona back in the day and I read a few with my daughter when she was in first (yes - first) grade, but my love for Ramona stems from the movie. I normally hate movies based on books - not this one.
I loved Ramona, but the Alice McKinley books had my whole heart! Well, okay, they shared my heart with Mary Downing Hahn's ghost stories... couldn't get enough of those!
I somehow missed the Ramona phase growing up, but I somehow always feel a warm twinge when people talk about those books being formative. I really should read them.
Great choice! I lived for Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume when I was a kid. :)
YAY for Ramona!!!
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. Oh how I loved that book!
I loved Ramona too! But the character that influenced me the most in my pre-teen years was Anne of Green Gables. She was silly and goofy and man I understood what it was to be like that. :o)
Thanks for sharing, Kate!
I loved Ramona as a kid! I think I was more like Pippi Longstocking though :)
Um, hello! Mouse and the Motorcycle. Ralph rocks!
